How to Reuse Stockings

Nylon stockings and pantyhose are not biodegradable, taking up to 40 years for the nylon to decompose. They also have a short life span, tearing and running after you have worn them only a few times. The stretchiness and strength of stockings adds to their usefulness. Keep your stockings out of the landfill by using them for a variety of household chores. Repurpose your stockings and get more value for the money you have already spent.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the elastic off the top of stockings or pantyhose, and repurpose as large rubber bands.

    • 2

Cut the legs from pantyhose and use to store rolls of wrapping paper, fabric, posters and other large sheets of art or drawing paper. Tie the top with a ribbon or twist-tie to secure.

    • 3

Stretch a stocking leg over a broom and use to sweep up pet hair and remove cobwebs from corners.

    • 4

Use cut off stocking legs in the garden to tie trees and shrubs to stakes and to support plant on trellises. The stocking will stretch as the plants grow and will not damage stems. Also, collect seeds and hang to dry in a stocking leg. Tie the top closed, and let the seeds air dry.

    • 5

Wrap jewelry in a stocking leg for traveling. Place each piece in the leg, and tie a knot in the stocking before adding the next piece to protect the pieces from scratching against each other. Carry a spare stocking leg for the return trip, and just cut the section of stocking holding the jewelry piece as you need it.

    • 6

Cut a length of stocking to encase a bar of soap. Tie both ends closed and create a loop on one end to hang on your outside faucet for quick cleanup after working in the garden or garage.

    • 7

Keep lengths of stockings in your workspace for varnishing and polishing furniture.

    • 8

Keep short lengths of stockings handy for removing nail polish and shining shoes.

    • 9

Store clean, used stockings with your craft supplies and use instead of polyester fiberfill to stuff dolls and pillows. As an alternative, cut narrow strips across the legs, and use for weaving or crocheting rag rugs.

    • 10

Secure the end of the stocking over a washer or dryer vent to collect lint. This will keep the lint from going down a sink drain or blowing out into the air.

    • 11

Wrap two or three legs of stockings inside another leg and create a scrubby sponge for the bath or household cleaning. Make sachets by putting fresh herbs and baking soda in a section of stocking. Tie both ends, and place in areas of the home that need freshening.
