How to Make Mitered Corners on Landscape Quilt

A landscape quilt creates a scene with fabric. The scene can be an outdoor nature scene or any other scene that you can envision. You may use mitered corners in the landscape design itself or at the binding to finish the quilt. Mitered corners may seem difficult, but are rather easy after you complete the first few. Use strips of fabric to make the mitered corners, but measure the quilt carefully before cutting any strips of fabric.

Instructions

    • 1

Square your finished landscape quilt off to make sure the opposite sides are even. Fold the finished quilt in half widthwise. Fold in half lengthwise, giving you four layers, lining up at the fabric along the folds. Trim off any uneven edges.

    • 2

Measure the length of the quilt, in the middle, to find the length for the sides of the quilt. Measure the width of the middle to find the proper length for the top and bottom borders. Add 3 inches to each strip to allow for overage for the mitering.

    • 3

Fold one of the strips in half to find the middle. Pin the middle of the strip to the middle of the finished landscape quilt top. Pin the strip to the quilt the rest of the way. Sew the strip to the quilt.

    • 4

Repeat Step 3 to attach the strip along the opposite of the quilt.

    • 5

Lay the third strip on top of one of the other strips with right sides together. Line up the ends exactly. Hold the two pieces of fabric in place with pins.

    • 6

Put the fabric on the sewing machine at an angle. Stitch from the corner of the quilt, over the binding pieces at a 45-degree angle.

    • 7

Flip the third strip over. It should lay so that you can sew it to the third side of the quilt. Sew the binding strip to the quilt. Repeat Step 6 to create the mitered edge for this end.

    • 8

Repeat Steps 5 through 7 to add the fourth side of mitered binding to the quilt.
