How to Get Bad Scratches Out of Brass

Brass is a metal with a traditional appearance and feel that is appealing to many homeowners. Unfortunately, neither solid brass nor brass plate is immune to scratches. Before buffing scratches from your brass, you should determine whether your piece is solid brass or brass-plated. Many older items are solid, while newer items may have brass plated over steel for durability and economy. Place a strong magnet against the brass. If the magnet does not stick, the item is likely solid brass. The magnet sticks to other metals that are brass-plated.

Instructions

  1. Solid Brass

    • 1

Mix together 1 cup white distilled vinegar and 1 tsp. plain table salt. Add all-purpose flour to the mix, a tablespoon at a time, stirring thoroughly after each addition. Stop adding flour when the mixture forms a paste.

    • 2

Apply the paste to the solid brass with a soft rag. Wait 15 to 20 minutes.

    • 3

Rinse the brass well with plain water. Buff the brass with a buffing pad until the scratches are completely gone and the surface is dry.

    Brass Plate

    • 4

Put on a pair of rubber gloves. Take your brass outdoors or to another very well-ventilated area.

    • 5

Dampen a soft rag with plain household ammonia.

    • 6

Buff the scratches out of the brass gently. Rinse the brass piece thoroughly and let it air-dry. It may be necessary to re-lacquer the brass once it is dry.
