How to Install Toggle Bolts on Drywall

If you plan to hang something heavy onto drywall, you need to use toggle bolts instead of drywall anchors. Toggle bolts have a collapsible nut that grips the back of the drywall. The nut is long so it applies pressure to a larger surface area on the wall, which gives you the ability to hang heavier objects on drywall without fear of the bolts pulling out of the wall.

Instructions

    • 1

Select the largest diameter toggle bolt that will fit through the mounting holes on the object you plan to mount to the drywall.

    • 2

Inspect the side of the collapsible nut for the correct drill bit needed for drilling the pilot hole. The fractional drill bit size is imprinted on the side of the nut.

    • 3

Place the object onto the wall in a level position and mark each mounting hole. Drill each mounting hole with the correct drill bit and a hand drill.

    • 4

Remove the collapsible toggle nut from the bolt and then place the bolts through the mounting holes on the object you are hanging.

    • 5

Thread the collapsible nut onto the end of the bolt so the nut will collapse over the bolt and not away from the bolt.

    • 6

Press the nuts into the wall. The nuts are spring-loaded and will automatically expand when they enter the wall.

    • 7

Hold the object against the wall and turn the bolt heads with a screwdriver to tighten the object into place.
