How to Steam-Iron Your Carpets

Over time, heavy furniture leaves dents in carpet fibers. You won't notice the problem until you rearrange the furniture in the room, at which point the indentations are conspicuous. Brushing and vacuuming just won't get the worst of them out, but there's a fix: Steam-iron the carpet and watch the furniture dents pop right out. To avoid the problem in the future, move your furniture periodically. A 3-inch shift once every month or so will keep the carpet fibers bouncing back.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull the carpet up with your fingers or a grooming tool to loosen and lift the flattened fibers.

    • 2

Turn the steam iron on and wait for it to generate steam.

    • 3

Hold the steam iron 2/3 inch above the carpet. Allow the steam to moisten and loosen the carpet fibers for 20 seconds.

    • 4

Lift and straighten the carpet fibers with your fingers or the carpet tool to return them to their original shape. If they are still slightly flat, steam and lift again. Repeat until the carpet fibers are straight or you make no more progress. The fibers will continue to straighten over time.
