How to Make a Desiccant Air Dryer

Desiccants are useful in drying the air in small areas, such as closets or pantries. Humid conditions encourage mold and mildew growth, but the desiccant can prevent this. It is not necessary to buy a commercial desiccant. Homemade air dryers are inexpensive to make.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Poke five or six holes in the lid of a plastic container. Use the pointed end of scissors or a knife blade to create the openings. Make the holes approximately the diameter of a pencil. This reduces spillage if the container is knocked off a shelf.

    • 2

Pour silica gel into the plastic container so there is approximately 2 inches in the bottom. This product is able to absorb half its weight in moisture, as suggested by the University of Florida IFAS Extension.

Place the lid on the container and set the homemade air dryer on a high shelf in your closet, pantry or other small space.
