DIY Pizza Oven Block

Professional pizza makers know that to get the best-tasting and crispiest crust, you must bake the pies on a hot stone. In pizza restaurants, this is accomplished by the pizza cooking on the floor of the oven. Restaurant supply stores sell pizza oven blocks or stones for home use, but these can be quite expensive. Improvise by shopping at a surprising place for the supplies to make your own pizza stone oven block.

Instructions

    • 1

Search your local garden center for terra cotta tile. Choose an unglazed plain tile that measures about 14 inches square.

    • 2

Remove any stickers or price tags from the tile. Rinse the tile off in clear water briefly then brush the tile surface with a vegetable brush. Place the tile on a dish drainer to air-dry completely.

    • 3

Move one oven rack to the lowest shelf position. Do this while the oven is completely cold.

    • 4

Place the pizza stone block in the center of the bottom oven rack. Make sure air can circulate around all four sides of the stone.

    • 5

Turn your oven on and preheat it for pizza baking. Slide the raw pizza onto the hot stone when the oven indicator light shows the oven is heated to the desired temperature. Leave the stone in the oven after the pizza is done.
