How to Kill Fleas in the Carpet Without Spray

Fleas love carpet. The piles offer an ideal hiding place for them to live, breed and jump onto passing meals. Fleas are relatively easy to get out of carpet without resorting to noxious sprays. However, getting the fleas out of the carpet is only half of the battle. Before tackling the fleas, you must treat the animal they feed on. Otherwise, the fleas will leap off your pet and infest the carpet again.

Instructions

    • 1

Mix a solution of equal parts Borax and diatomaceous earth in a container, ensuring that you have enough to dust the entire carpet with. One-half cup of the mixture is usually more than enough to cover an average-sized room (400 square feet). Keep the Borax and diatomaceous earth nearby in case you have to make more. If you have any mixture left over, place it in an airtight container and keep it away from moisture.

    • 2

Place the mixture in a salt shaker for easy application.

    • 3

Put your pets outside or keep them out of the room.

    • 4

Put on a dust mask, as the fine diatomaceous earth and Borax powder can easily enter your lungs.

    • 5

Sprinkle the carpet with a fine dusting of the mixture. Be sure to get the areas near the floor boards and under the furniture. Borax will kill the adult fleas, while diatomaceous earth will kill any eggs or larvae it comes into contact with. The fleas are injured upon contact and die of injury and dehydration in 24 to 72 hours.

    • 6

Walk over the carpet, or sweep it to shift the mixture down into the carpet piles.

    • 7

Allow your pets back into the room once the dust settles.

    • 8

Vacuum the carpet within 24 to 48 hours.

    • 9

Re-apply the mixture as often as necessary if you still see fleas or notice bites.
