How to Cut Table Skirting to Size

Tablecloth skirting is a fabric panel that mounts along the edge of a table and falls to the floor. Skirting is commonly used for buffet tables, events and the bottom area of stages. When you order skirting you may not know the exact table type and size that you will use for your event. If you are buying the skirting and installing it yourself, you will be responsible for correcting the fit. If you rent skirting and tables together, the rental company will ship the correct size for their tables. It's possible to fit and cut your purchased skirting in a few minutes at the event site.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the table or tables where the skirting will be installed. Skirting can wrap around a table, along one side, along three sides or connect more than one table together. Position your table or tables first and then measure the distance the skirting should cover to achieve the effect you want.

    • 2

Measure the length of your skirting. Typically skirting is shipped in lengths that either fit a specific table size or are no more than 25 feet per section. This is to assist the recipient in dealing with the weight and bulk of the fabric. To determine what you have received, always check your measurements. You may have several skirts that are different sizes that should go with different tables.

    • 3

Attach your hook-and-loop clips to the top face of your table. Generic clips are sent with most skirts unless you specify the exact table style you are using. If no clips are sent, have adhesive backed heavy-duty hook-and-loop tape ready to use as a backup. The clips or tape should begin and end at your starting points and be evenly spaced every 2 feet or less apart.

    • 4

Fit your skirting to the table. Be prepared for the skirt to be wrinkled. Have a steamer available at the event site to ease any wrinkles on site. The skirt should fit evenly along the top edge of the table and fall straight. When possible the bottom of the skirt should be 1/2 inch above the floor.

Check the fitted length of the cloth before marking your cut. Use tailor's chalk to mark the cloth at the table edge. Pull the cloth straight down and mark the hem. Remove the cloth and lay it flat on the table. Check the straightness of the two marks. If they look good, draw a line with chalk and cut 1/2 inch outside the line to the waste side.

Fold the edge of the cloth under 1/2 inch. Insert no-sew hem tape and iron the hem securely.
