How to Make a Tablecloth for an Oval Shaped Table

Oval dining tables are available in a variety of sizes, which makes finding a tablecloth with an exact fit difficult. Custom-make your own tablecloth for an oval-shaped table using flat bed sheets. Two coordinating bed sheets cut to size and stitched together will provide a reversible tablecloth that doesn't require the fussiness of hemming around curved corners. The finished oval tablecloth can be flipped to reveal the desired side for different occasions and seasons.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay one twin bed sheet over your oval table with an even amount overhanging from each edge.

    • 2

Mark the shape of the table using a disappearing ink pen and following the edge of the table.

    • 3

Measure 9 inches out from the marked line and mark with a dot using the disappearing ink pen. Repeat the measurement and dots every 5 to 6 inches around the table. Using the pen, connect the dots.

    • 4

Cut out the oval shape along the outer marked line.

    • 5

Lay the remaining bed sheet on a clean floor space with the right side facing up. Center the cut oval on top of the bed sheet with the right side facing down. Pin the edges of the oval to the bottom sheet. Cut the sheet using the oval as a pattern.

    • 6

Sew around the pinned edges of the tablecloth using a 1/2-inch seam allowance and leaving an 8-inch opening in the center of one long edge. Trim the seam allowance to 1/4 inch, excluding the seam allowance at the 8-inch opening.

    • 7

Turn the reversible oval tablecloth right side out through the opening. Press the edges.

    • 8

Sew around the edge of the tablecloth, 1/4 inch from the edge. This will create a professionally finished edge and will close the opening.
