How to Get Mold out of a Recyclable Bottle

Bottled water is a large commodity in the United States. In 2006, for example, Americans consumed 8.3 billion gallons of bottled water. The disposable plastic bottles are not intended for reuse, according to the University of Florida, but many people do because it's convenient and it saves money. Some water bottles, though, are sold for the purpose of reusing, and these -- like the disposable kind -- are usually recyclable. Whatever type of recyclable water bottle you use, you can remove mold in a similar manner.

Fill the bottle to the rim with tap water. Set aside for several hours.

    • 3

Fill a shallow dish with water and add 1 tsp. of bleach. Submerge the bottle cap to remove any mold and bacteria from it as well.

    • 4

Rinse the bottle and cap completely to remove all traces of bleach and mold.

Shake and towel dry as much of the bottle and cap as possible. Air dry the bottle in an airy location with the cap off.
