How to Remove Fireplace Odors

While fireplaces provide warmth and light to a room, the smell lingers and makes the home have a smoky odor. The odor smells the strongest inside the fireplace, and it often lingers on other surfaces in the room. Deodorize your fireplace to keep it and your home smelling fresh during the cool nights and winter months. Enjoy the fire without letting the smell ruin your evening.

Instructions

    • 1

Vacuum the fireplace with a wet/dry vacuum to remove the ashes once they cool completely for four days or more.

    • 2

Sprinkle fresh coffee grounds over the cold ashes if you cannot vacuum them. Remove the ashes with a fireplace shovel and place them into a bucket. Pour the ashes into a metal trash container outdoors. The coffee grounds mask the odor while you clean the fireplace.

    • 3

Dampen a washcloth with white vinegar and wipe down the inside of the fireplace to neutralize the smoke odor.

    • 4

Place two to three lemon or orange peels into the fireplace while a fire burns. The lemon peels release a pleasant scent into the air and reduce the smoky smell.

    • 5

Turn on ventilation fans to remove the smoke smell from the home. Crack windows open if possible to help the air circulate.
