How to Make a Tobacco Bowl

Smoking tobacco through a pipe or bowl has a different flavor profile than smoking a hand-rolled or store-bought cigarette. Bowls are similar to pipes, except that the bowl features a small hole on the side, also known as a carb. As you smoke, you tap your hand against the carb, which lets in more air and results in more inhaled smoke. Making your own tobacco bowl involves a few tools and a tree limb.

Instructions

Pick a branch from a tree that is at least six inches in length. Look at the diameter of each tree and pick one with a diameter large enough for your tobacco bowl. In general, you want a branch with a diameter of at least two inches. Rustic Girls recommend a branch from a seasoned cherry tree.

Measure 3.5 inches along the branch and run your pencil around the branch, marking the top of the bowl. Turn the branch around so that the flat side faces up. Push the tip of the knife into the exact center of the branch. Trim off the excess wood, using a handsaw and following your earlier mark, which creates the bowl. Clamp the branch into a vise clamp with the freshly cut side facing up.

Drill through the center of the branch, stopping before you drill through to the bottom. Leave at least 1/2 inch at the bottom. Move to a larger dill bit progressively, drilling out the center of the bowl. Remove the piece from the vise.

Set the bowl on a flat surface with the opening or drilled area facing up. Press the edge of the knife against the side of the bowl and press it straight through the bowl. Make sure that the holes sit slightly above the bottom of the hollow spot in the center of the bowl. Place the drill against the knife mark and push the drill straight through from the outside to the inside. Move the drill to the opposite side of the bowl and create a second hole, which serves as the carb.

Find a thin branch the exact same diameter as one of your holes in the bowl. Place the branch inside the clamp and carefully drill through the wood, removing the center pulp. Cut the branch down to a manageable size, such as 6 inches long. Insert the branch into the center of one hole for the stem and use the second hole as the carb.
