How to Remove a Rusted Tie Bar

If the humidity got to your tie bar and rusted the clasp spring you could end up damaging your neck tie if you try to pull the bar off the tie by force. You could also damage the tie if you spray the tie bar with rust breaker spray. If you want to minimize damage to your tie while removing a rusted tie bar, you can do so by using a bit of finesse.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Place the necktie flat and face down on a table so you can easily access the rusted clasp.

    • 2

Place blue painter's tape on the surface of the tie along both edges of the tie bar. Blue painter’s tape is low-tack and will not damage fabrics. It comes off easily and will protect the fabric of the tie from any chemicals you might spill.

    • 3

Spray the tip of a Q-tip with rust breaker spray, which you can purchase at most automotive supply retailers. Hold the spray can and Q-tip away from the tie to avoid overspray.

    • 4

Rub the tip of the Q-tip over the metal surfaces on the clasp that have rust. Focus the Q-tip on the areas that prevent the clasp from opening. Wait 15 to 20 minutes.

    • 5

Open the clasp and remove it from the tie. If the clasp still does not open, reapply the rust breaking spray and then remove the claps. Sometimes, if the rust is bad, it can take several applications to break down the rust.
