How to Build Your Own Clay Pot Hanger

Clay pots are an excellent choice for hanging plants, as they absorb water without allowing it to drain away, and they keep the plant’s roots warm. They add texture and color to a room, but before you can enjoy them, you need to hang them. Make your own clay pot hangers out of strips of fabric.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut nine strips of fabric that are about 3 feet long and 2 inches wide. If you use a polar fleece or a jersey, you get a nonfrayed look, though a frayed look goes well with bohemian or eclectic decor.

    • 2

Knot the strips together at one end.

    • 3

Separate out three strips of fabric and braid them together into a cord, securing them with a safety pin once you are done.

    • 4

Repeat Step 3 for the other strips, making three braids total.

    • 5

Tie the loose ends of the braids together.

    • 6

Measure the circumference of the pot using a measuring tape, and divide this measurement by 3.

    • 7

Braid three short braids, each one as long as the measurement you found in Step 6, and knot them off to finish them.

    • 8

Measure the distance from the center bottom of the clay pot to a point three-quarters of the way up the pot’s side using a measuring tape.

    • 9

Measure the distance found in Step 8, starting from first knot on one of the three long braided strips and proceeding up the braid. Mark this point with a pencil.

    • 10

Repeat Step 9 for the other two braids, making pencil marks on both of them.

    • 11

Sew the ends of one short braid to the two pencil-marked points on two adjacent long braids using a needle and thread.

    • 12

Repeat Step 11 for the other two short braids. Each short braid connects two long braids, with two short braids sewn to each long braid. When viewed from the top, the short braids form a triangle, with a long braid at each corner. The short braids hold the pot while the long braids suspend it.

    • 13

Set the clay pot into the hanger, allowing the short braids to support it and keep it steady.
