How to Make a Fabric Sunflower

Handmade fabric flowers can be stitched or glued to clothing or gifts as embellishments, or used as magnets or brooches by gluing magnets disks or pins to their backs. Instructions

    • 1

Choose six scraps of fabric in six different shades of yellow and gold. Place each scrap on your ironing surface with the wrong side facing up. Iron the fabric to remove wrinkles and creases.

    • 2

Trace one circle on the back of each fabric scrap using a compass. You will need two 3-inch circles and four 2-inch circles. Cut out the circles.

    • 3

Cut a 1/2-inch triangle-shaped notch on the edge of one circle. Make another notch next to the first, connecting the outer points of the notch. Repeat all the way around the circle. The finished cuts will look similar to fabric that has been cut with pinking shears, although the notches are bigger and deeper. The notches do not need to be perfect. Repeat the notches on each circle.

    • 4

Lay a 3-inch circle on your work surface with the right side facing up. Place the other 3-inch circle on top with the right side facing up. Shift the circles to allow the notched points on the bottom circle to show through the notches of the top circle.

    • 5

Fold each of the 2-inch circles in half with the wrong sides together. Iron the folded circles to crease and hold the fold.

    • 6

Lay two of the folded circles in the center of the stacked 3-inch circles. Place the half-circles with their folded edges touching and running horizontal. Lay the other two half-circles on top of the first pair in the same way. Line up their folded edges to run vertically.

    • 7

Hold your finger in the center to prevent the halves from shifting. Fold down the top of the left hand vertical half-circle. Flip up the left side of the top horizontal half-circle. Unfold the vertical circle. Lay the left side of the horizontal half-circle on top.

    • 8

Fold up the bottom of the right hand vertical half-circle. Flip up the right side of the bottom horizontal half-circle. Unfold the vertical half-circle. Lay the right side of the horizontal half-circle on top. Pin the center of the stacked sunflower through all layers.

Place a 1-inch flat brown button in the center of the fabric sunflower. Using brown thread and a hand needle, sew the button to the flower. Knot the thread and insert the needle from the center-back to the front. Insert the needle through a hole in the button. Insert the needle back through another hole in the button and through the flower to the back. Repeat until the button is secure. Knot and cut the thread.
