How to Get Imprints Out of Carpet

Leaving furniture in the same place for too long leaves imprints that show when you move the furniture. Some imprints can be quite deep if you have a deep pile or shag rug. Carefully remove these imprints so you don’t tear the pile or permanently ruin the carpet.

Instructions

  1. Spray Bottle Method

    • 1

Fill a spray bottle with clear water.

    • 2

Spray the carpet dent with water until it is damp.

    • 3

Adjust a hairdryer to the hottest setting.

    • 4

Dry the carpet while working the fibers up with your fingers. The heat from the hairdryer helps the carpet rebound.

    • 5

Repeat the process if the indentation still is visible.

    Ice Method

    • 6

Drop an ice cube in each imprint. Let it sit for 12 hours and allow the ice to melt completely.

    • 7

Blot up the excess water with a clean cloth.

    • 8

Lift the carpet fibers up with the edge of a spoon and allow the carpet to air dry.

    Steam Method

    • 9

Soak a clean cloth in clear water.

    • 10

Lay the cloth over the imprint.

    • 11

Hold an iron on medium heat several inches above the cloth. This produces a slight amount of steam that helps fluff up the carpet. Hold the iron in place for 60 seconds.

    • 12

Brush up the carpets with a spoon. Let the carpet completely dry.
