How to Make Natural Homemade Liquid Dishwasher Gel

The first dishwasher was invented by Josephine Cochrane in the 19th century as a way to protect her fine china from becoming chipped and damaged. By 2003, approximately 58 percent of homes featured an automatic dishwasher, according to the American Housing Survey. Save money on expensive, commercial dishwashing detergent by creating your own gel from safe, natural ingredients.

Instructions

    • 1

Grate two 4-oz. bars of organic white soap over a plastic bowl. Pour the soap flakes, 1/2 cup table salt and 1/2 gallon water into a large cooking pot.

    • 2

Bring the mixture to a boil over high heat, stirring occasionally. Reduce the heat to low and allow the mixture to simmer for 10 minutes, or until the soap flakes are completely melted.

    • 3

Remove the mixture from the heat, pour it into a plastic bowl and add 1 tbsp. lemon juice, 2 tbsp. baking soda and 2 tbsp. washing soda. Stir the ingredients and cover the bowl with a paper towel.

    • 4

Allow the mixture to sit for at least 24 hours. During this time the bar soap will solidify, creating the gel consistency.

    • 5

Store the homemade dishwashing gel in an airtight container.
