How to Get Stuck on Labels Off of Glass Jars

Glass jars make a handy container for a variety of household tasks, from storing food items to organizing office supplies or displaying small collections. Reusing jars once they are empty of their original contents saves money and keeps them from the landfill, but the old labels become tattered and unattractive with washing and age. The labels typically are affixed to the jar with water-soluble glues that often remain on the glass surface even after the paper portion of the label peels off. Dissolving the old adhesive gives you a pristine jar ready to be filled with whatever you desire.

Instructions

    • 1

Scrape or peel off as much of the old label as possible. Use a plastic knife to scrape off the label, as the plastic won't scratch the surface of the glass.

    • 2

Fill a bowl with hot water. Add 1 squirt of liquid dish soap and ¼ cup white vinegar to the water.

    • 3

Soak the jar in the hot water solution for 10 to 20 minutes, or until the label adhesive begins to soften.

    • 4

Scrub the exterior of the jar with a mildly abrasive cleaning sponge, removing as much adhesive as possible. Wipe the jar dry with a clean cloth.

    • 5

Soak the jar in hot water and scrub the jar a second time if any adhesive remains.
