How to Make a Window Draft Guard

When the winter months roll around and you’re feeling the drafts coming into your home, make yourself at bit toastier by crafting a window draft guard. Window draft guards help you block the drafts coming in from around the window, which helps seal up your home and cut down on your heating bills. Window draft guards can be made to the specific size of your window, and they can also be made out of fabric that coordinates with the room they are in.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure across the bottom edge of the window for which you are making the draft guard and add 1 inch.

    • 2

Cut a fabric rectangle that is 6 inches wide and as long as the measurement you found in step 1 using a pair of sharp scissors.

    • 3

Fold the fabric rectangle in half along the length, making a long, skinny rectangle. If the fabric has a pattern, make sure that the pattern side is facing in.

    • 4

Sew along the long edge and one short edge using a needle and thread, placing the seam a quarter inch from the raw edges. This makes a tube with one open end. You may also use a sewing machine for this task.

    • 5

      Turn the tube inside out.

    • 6

Fill the tube with uncooked rice until it is firm.

    • 7

Turn the raw edges of the tube inside and sew the tube shut.

    • 8

Lay the draft blocker on the window sill and against the crack where the window meets the sill. This prevents drafts from getting in.
