Making Decorative Pillows for a Couch

Decorative throw pillows make a couch more comfortable to sit or lie on, and they add a visual dimension to the couch as well. Make a simple pillow to give your couch some color and patterning. Use fabric that contrasts well with the colors and textures of your home. Though making decorative pillows for your couch requires some sewing skill, it is possible to make several in an evening.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut two squares out of fabric that measure 12 inches on all sides.

    • 2

Lay one square on top of the other so that their edges line up, pattern side facing inward.

    • 3

Sew around the edge of the squares using a needle and thread, creating a seam that is 1/4 inch from the edge of the fabric and leaving a 3-inch gap open (not sewn) on one side. If the fabric seems inclined to fray, set the seam back 1/2 inch from the edge of the fabric. You can also use a sewing machine for this step.

    • 4

Turn the pillow inside out through the gap and push the corners out as much as possible. Sometimes it helps to push the eraser end of a pencil into each corner.

    • 5

Stuff the pillow with polyester fiber fill through the gap.

    • 6

Turn the raw edges of the gap down into the pillow and sew the gap shut.
