How to Care for Mercerized-Cotton Laced Tablecloths

John Mercer obtained the first patent for the mercerization process that produced mercerized cotton, a cotton fiber featuring an attractive sheen resulting from a special chemical process. When you have household items made from mercerized cotton, your items contain exceedingly strong cotton fibers that will withstand washing and drying due to the chemical process of mercerization. Care for mercerized-cotton laced tablecloths properly to keep them beautiful for many years.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the tablecloth after each use to note stains that may need special attention. Insert a safety pin at the point of a stain so you can find them again.

    • 2

Place the tablecloth into a sink of warm water and add an enzyme-based detergent to pretreat any stains. Soak the tablecloth for 20 to 30 minutes, then rub gently at the stains. Rinse the tablecloth and squeeze excess water from the fabric.

    • 3

Wash the tablecloth in the washing machine in warm water using standard laundry detergent. If the lace is especially fine, use a gentle or delicate wash cycle with a light spin cycle.

    • 4

Remove the tablecloth from the washing machine and check the cloth for any remaining stains. If stains remain, repeat the pretreating and washing process. If the tablecloth is clean, remove the pins and dry it in the dryer on warm heat.

    • 5

Fold the tablecloth neatly after it dries. Store the tablecloth folded flat in a linen closet.
