How to Make Scented Microwave Heatpads

A microwaveable heatpad is a simple way to sooth aching muscles in your neck and and back. Adding a little scent to the pad allows for the fragrant benefits of a flower such as lavender. The pillow heatpad can be used for easing menstrual cramps by warming and placing on the lower abdomen as necessary. The warmth and scent of a microwaveable pillow also helps in easing daily stress.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure your fabric to the size desired. A heatpad measuring about 10 inches wide and 15 inches long works well, so measure slightly larger to include seams. Longer fabric can be folded over so only three sides require sewing. Fabric that is soft to the touch will be comfortable.

    • 2

Lay the fabric front side up and fold it over itself from the middle after you have measured. Cut the fabric with the scissors.

    • 3

Sew the two long sides with a sewing machine. The third end side will be sewn after being filled.

    • 4

Turn your heatpad casing right-side out and fill with white rice or flaxseed. These both hold heat once microwaved. For a heatpad of 10 inches by 15 inches, fill with approximately 3 cups of rice or flaxseed. Avoid over-filling because the heatpad filling should lay flat throughout the casing, at the depth of about an inch.

    • 5

Add dried lavender flowers to the filling. About a half a cup is sufficient.

    • 6

Fold the open ends in on themselves and sew the open end shut with the sewing machine. The seam will be out, so make the seam neat and straight. The folded-in ends will keep the ends from fraying.
