How to Make Homemade Orange Deodorizers

When odors overwhelm a room, they can quickly spread to other areas of your house, making it feel less than clean. Remove odors when they occur to keep your home smelling fresh. Expensive commercial deodorizers contain chemicals that can irritate your lungs; make homemade orange deodorizers to freshen a room naturally. Use the oranges in a variety of ways to fill your home with a fresh citrus scent. The orange peel, fruit and oils all leave a pleasant and sweet scent in the air.

Things You'll Need

  • Fresh whole oranges
  • Whole cloves
  • Scissors
  • String
  • Cooking pot
  • Spray bottle

Instructions

  1. Pomanders

      Insert whole cloves into a fresh orange. Cover the entire surface of the orange with the cloves.

      Cut a piece of string long enough to wrap around the orange. Add a few extra inches to hang the orange in its new location.

      Hang the orange in the closet, cabinet or kitchen to deodorize the area.

    Fresh Potpourri

      Remove the peels from two to three whole oranges.

      Put the peels in a cooking pot.

      Fill the pot with enough water to cover the peels.

      Simmer the peels on the stove for one hour.

    Disposal Deodorizer

      Remove the peels from one or two oranges.

      Put the citrus peels in the garbage disposal.

      Run the water in the sink.

      Turn the garbage disposal on until the peels wash away.

    Room Deodorizer Spray

      Fill a spray bottle with water and add 10 to 20 drops of orange essential oil.

      Shake the bottle to combine the oil with the water before each use.
