How to Avoid Sofa Weight Marks on a Carpet

Carpeting comes in three main texture types: loop, with fibers that fold over and attach to the backing at each end; cut loop, with loops cut in the center so that the fibers stand up straight, albeit with some tufting at the tips; and cut and loop, which combines the two. Although concentrated pressure, such as that caused by sofa legs, on any carpet style can leave weight marks, dents in cut loop are most noticeable because of the depth of the pile. Preserve your carpet's texture and appearance by protecting it against furniture indentations and repairing existing marks before they become permanent.

Instructions

  1. Avoiding Sofa Weight Marks

    • 1

Measure the diameter of the bottoms of your sofa legs at floor level. Note how many legs your sofa has.

    • 2

Purchase furniture glides or cups in the smallest size available to cover the bottom surface of each leg without extending so far as to be obvious. Purchase one for each leg.

    • 3

Cut a small piece of leftover carpet, using the box cutter, for each furniture leg as an alternative to purchasing glides or cups. Size each piece to fit the ends of the sofa legs.

    • 4

Lift each corner of the sofa and, if necessary, the front and back centers, to slide a cup, glide or carpet piece underneath.

    • 5

Move the sofa a few inches front, back or to the side each time you vacuum to further protect the carpet against dents.

Quick Fix for Minor Weight Marks

    • 6

Dampen the indentation with a wet cloth.

    • 7

Work the fibers back to an upright position with the tines of a fork or the edge of a spoon.

    • 8

Dry the carpet with a blow dryer, if desired.

    Minimizing Deep Dents

    • 9

Place one or more ice cubes in each existing dent, to cover each dent completely.

    • 10

Allow the ice to melt into the dent. Leave the carpet and the ice undisturbed as the fibers begin to fluff up. The fibers must be saturated for an extended period to achieve maximum results.

    • 11

Pull up fibers that remain flattened with the tines of a fork or the edge of a spoon after the ice melts away.

    • 12

Dry the carpet with a blow dryer, if desired.
