How to Restore Carpet With Indents

Dense pile carpets become indented if you leave heavy furniture in the same place for too long. You can restore the carpet using household tools and products. Be careful when raising indents so you don’t tear or pull at the carpet fibers. You can damage the carpet if you are too aggressive with it.

Instructions

  1. Ice Method

    • 1

Place two ice cubes in each indentation. Let them melt.

    • 2

Gently brush the wet carpet with a stiff brush to work up the carpet fibers. Don’t brush too hard as you can fray the carpet fibers.

    • 3

Let the carpet completely dry, then thoroughly vacuum it.

    • 4

Work the carpet fibers up with a metal spoon if the fibers still are indented.

    Steam Method

    • 5

      Wet a cloth.

    • 6

Place the cloth over the indentation.

    • 7

Turn on an iron to medium heat and let it come to temperature.

    • 8

Hold the hot iron a few inches above the wet cloth for 60 seconds. Don’t let the iron touch the carpet as it can burn and ruin the carpet fibers.

    • 9

Brush up the fibers with a metal spoon.
