Making an Air Deodorizer From Baking Soda

Making a homemade air deodorizer out of baking soda is an effective way to rid your home of foul odors since it absorbs smells. Cooking cabbage or turnips greens or frying fish fills your home with an offensive odor that may linger for many days. Cigarette smoke, a dirty cat box or the presence of mold are other situations that create a stench in the air. Homemade air deodorizers are much less expensive than commercial products and generally safer for your family and the environment.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a clean plastic spray bottle with 4 cups of warm or hot water. The heat enables the baking soda to dissolve.

    • 2

Add 1/4 cup of baking soda and 2 teaspoons of ammonia to the bottle. Shake the bottle to dissolve the powder.

    • 3

Add 10 drops of the essential oil to the container. Many people use a citrus oil to give their home a fresh, clean scent. Lemon or orange essential oils provide this type of fragrance. Other pleasing fragrances are cinnamon, vanilla and lavender. Use whatever scent you prefer.

    • 4

Screw the lid onto the plastic bottle. Shake it to mix the solution.

    • 5

Spray the deodorizer in the air in rooms with an offensive odor. The baking soda and ammonia neutralize the odors and the essential oil adds an attractive scent.
