Getting Burns Out of a Stainless Pan

Stainless steel pans provide even heat and resist food stains, but they don't have a nonstick coating to repel burnt-on food residue. The steel sometimes discolors if a pan cooks dry and scorches. Temporary stains may appear even after you remove the scorched or burnt food, but these are rarely permanent. Proper cleaning removes the burn stains without causing scratches so your stainless pots and pans look shiny and new again.

Instructions

    • 1

Soak the pan in warm, soapy water for 30 minutes to loosen any remaining food residue on the surface. Wipe the food out with a mildly abrasive sponge and rinse the pan with clear water.

    • 2

Fill the pan with 1 quart of water. Mix 2 tablespoons of lemon juice in with the water. Use additional water and lemon juice, if necessary, to submerge the burn marks in the water.

    • 3

Bring the water to a boil over medium-high heat. Allow the water to boil for five to 10 minutes.

    • 4

Empty the hot water from the pan. Wash it a second time in warm, soapy water to remove the remaining scorch and burn marks.
