Removing Burned Grits From a Pot

A bowl of warm grits makes a comforting breakfast but overcooking them on the stovetop may cause burnt stains at the bottom of the pot. This usually is not the case with nonstick cookware, since the grit’s charred residue is removed with warm water. For other types of pots, burnt grit stains can be removed using common household items that effectively clean without staining or scratching the pot.

Instructions

    • 1

Rinse the pot in warm water and scrub gently with a dish brush, removing as many loose grits from the pot's bottom as possible.

    • 2

Sprinkle a thin layer of baking soda onto the burned grits. Make sure the baking soda completely covers the bottom of the pot.

    • 3

Pour 2 to 3 cups of water into the pot using a measuring cup. Use enough water so the burnt area is completely submerged.

    • 4

Set the pot on the stove and let the water simmer for five to 10 minutes. Don't allow the water to evaporate.

    • 5

Dump the heated water from the pot. Use the edge of a plastic spatula to lift the burnt grits from the pot's bottom. Wash the pot with water and dry with a clean cloth. Store the pot in a cool, dry cabinet.
