How to Cure an Iron Skillet on a Stove Top

Cast iron skillets are durable and, when properly cleaned and cared for, will last a lifetime. Part of the maintenance is seasoning, or curing, a process that creates a non-stick barrier that protects the iron from wear and tear. Seasoning involves covering the skillet with cooking oil which is heated and absorbed into the skillet’s pores. Cure your cast iron skillet with less mess on the stove top.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the cast iron skillet with soapy water. Rinse it well under a cool tap and dry with a microfiber cloth.

    • 2

Dampen a paper towel with peanut or vegetable oil and wipe down the entire surface of the skillet, including the handle. Preheat the burner for two to three minutes on a low setting.

    • 3

Set the skillet onto the burner and allow it to cure for 20 to 30 minutes, or until the peanut or vegetable oil turns a dark brown color and is almost completely evaporated.

    • 4

Remove the skillet from the heat with an oven mitt and allow it to cool completely.

    • 5

Wipe down the skillet with a paper towel to remove any remaining oil.
