How to Remove Odor From Burnt Plastic in Dishwasher

If a plastic object falls on directly on the heating element in your dishwasher it can burn and melt the plastic, creating a pungent plastic odor that can permeate your home. This smell is toxic and it will eventually dissipate, but you can speed up the process with natural solutions that will absorb or neutralize the odors. Prevent the odor by ensuring that your dishes are properly secured and by not over loading the dishwasher.

Instructions

    • 1

Open your windows and doors to air out the kitchen. Open windows and doors on opposite sides of the home to encourage a cross breeze. This will help move the odor outside your home.

    • 2

Fill a spray bottle with white vinegar.

    • 3

Open the dishwasher and spray the entire inside area with white vinegar. The white vinegar will help neutralize the stain. Let it sit for 20 minutes and re-spray the area as soon as it dries out.

    • 4

      Let the area dry completely.

    • 5

Fill a shallow bowl with white vinegar and place it above the dishwasher. The white vinegar will evaporate and neutralize the odors in the air.
