How to Get Oil Off of Stoneware

Stoneware pieces vary from baking dishes to pizza stones and all are typically cleaned in a similar manner. Do not use dish soap or wash stoneware in the dishwasher because soaps seep into the porous natural stone, affecting the taste and quality of the foods you’ll later cook. Usually, all you need to do to clean stoneware is to scrape off food residues with a plastic cleaning tool or spatula and wash it using hot water and a nylon scrubbing pad or brush. Oils do accumulate in the porous surface, though, and that is OK. If you would like to get the oil out, however, a deeper, more thorough cleaning will be necessary.

Instructions

    • 1

Wait until the stoneware cools to room temperature before removing the oil. Stoneware is very hot and dangerous to clean until it cools.

    • 2

Make your own cleaning paste that is safe to use on stoneware using baking soda and water.

    • 3

Cover the stoneware with the baking soda paste where the oil is located. Rub it in just a little bit. Then, let it sit for approximately 20 minutes.

    • 4

Rinse the stoneware under hot running water to remove the paste and oily residues.
