How to Hang a Heavy Mirror With a Ledger Board

A ledger board is a board that spans across two fixed points such as two wall studs or two posts. You can use a ledger board to hang a heavy mirror when you can’t attach the mirror directly to the studs due to the spacing of the mirror’s mounting locations. Installing the mirror with a ledger board will ensure the mirror does not come crashing down due to it’s weight.

Things You'll Need

  • Ledger board (1-inch thick by 6-inch wide board)
  • Miter, table or circular saw
  • 1/4-inch drill bit
  • Electric drill
  • Lag bolts

Instructions

    • 1

Place the mirror over the ledger board and then place a mark on the board to denote the width of the mirror.

    • 2

Cut the ledger board to the measured length using a miter, table or circular saw.

    • 3

Locate two studs on the wall and mark them with a pencil. Use an electric stud finder if you cannot locate the studs by tapping on the wall.

    • 4

Center the ledger board over the two studs and place four marks on the board over the center of each stud. Space two marks at each end of the ledger board and space them evenly.

    • 5

Drill a 1/4-inch hole with a drill bit and electric drill at each marked location.

    • 6

Position the ledger board back against the studs and place a level on top to ensure the board rests level on the wall. Secure the ledger board with 1/4-inch lag bolts.

    • 7

Center the mirror over the ledger board and mark the mirror’s mounting locations on the ledger board.

    • 8

Drive 1/4-inch lag bolts into the marked locations until approximately 1/4-inch of the bolt head rests out of the board.

    • 9

Place the mirror onto the lag bolts to secure it.
