Getting a Burn Mark out of a Carpet

If a careless smoker happens to drop a lit cigarette on your carpet and leaves behind a scorch mark, consider rearranging the furniture to hide the defect. Unfortunately, this is not always possible, especially if the mark is in the middle of the room or in a hallway or doorway. Depending on the extent of the burn mark and the pile of the carpet, it might be possible to snip off the burned fibers and remove the mark without ruining the appearance of the carpet. Other options include washing away the burned fibers or fading the scorch mark.

Instructions

    • 1

Snip off the burned carpet fibers using sharp scissors. Be careful not to remove too much of the carpet. If this isn’t possible due to the extent of the burn or the texture of the carpet, continue to the next step.

    • 2

Add one-quarter teaspoon of liquid dish soap to a cup of lukewarm water.

    • 3

Blot the stain with the soap solution, using a paper towel.

    • 4

Sponge the area with lukewarm water to remove all soap residue. Blot it dry. Continue with the next step if the mark remains.

    • 5

Combine one part hydrogen peroxide with five parts water in a cup.

    • 6

Dip the tip of a cotton swab into the solution. Blot the scorched area of the carpet with the swab to lighten the appearance of the burn mark. Avoid getting the solution on unscorched areas as it will lighten the carpet.
