How to Fix Down Comforters That Have Clumped

A down comforter is filled with thousands of insulating feathers that can keep a sleeper warm. Over time, however, the down can start to clump and push to the edges. This results in a comforter that is too warm in some spots and too cool in others. Down comforters should receive a small amount of daily care as well as some regular maintenance to ensure that the down remains evenly distributed.

Turn the comforter every morning. When you make the bed, turn the comforter so that the part that was at your feet is now at the head of the bed. This will ensure that there is even wear on the comforter. If the comforter is reversible, flip it to the other side.

Hang your comforter on an outdoor clothesline on a sunny day. It will freshen the comforter and the motion from the wind will help fluff the down.

Grasp the bottom edge of the comforter and swing it up in front of you. When the comforter is about eye level, jerk it back down swiftly, causing the comforter to snap out. This sharp movement helps redistribute the feathers. You may also have another person grasp the opposite end and snap it down with you. Repeat four or five times.

Put the comforter in the dryer with three tennis balls. Run the machine on a no-heat or low-heat setting. The agitation causes the down to fluff up again. Most home dryers can handle a twin-size or a full-size comforter. However, you may need to use an industrial dryer for a queen- or a king-sized one.
