Keep your home clean. Dirt and debris can cause damage to the property, appliances and furniture. Basic cleaning includes things like washing dishes, sweeping and mopping the floors, cleaning toilets and sinks, doing laundry, dusting and keeping surfaces, appliances and pet areas clean.

Dispose of trash properly and frequently. Empty trash bins and seal your garbage, especially after having parties/guests, cooking or baking. Part of keeping a good home means keeping it sanitary, fresh smelling and free of pests. Not disposing of trash properly can attract insects or other household pests, and it can even devalue your home. Check with your local refuse removal service and know and follow the proper guidelines. Sometimes this includes recycling and/or yard waste. Have the proper receptacles in your home, garage, shed or yard.

If you have a yard, make sure it stays healthy. This means if you have plants and they require watering or trimming, you perform those tasks or oversee their performance. You might even choose to plant your own garden, modify your landscaping or set up outdoor furniture. If you have pets that go outside, keep their areas clean and be sure to clean up after them.

Replenish household goods. Purchase and supply toilet paper, soap, sponges, trash bags, cleaning supplies and other household supplies. The homemaker is responsible for ensuring that members of the household and guests can properly use the bathroom and kitchen facilities.

Hire help if you need to and you have the means. You can contract housecleaners, gardeners or even chefs to take care of various household needs. You can also hire plumbers, contractors for remodeling, painters and other professionals to assist you with your house. If you can't afford to do this but oversee a large house, ask for help from other able members of the household.
