Calibrating a Kitchen Scale

A kitchen scale allows you to accurately measure the ingredients in your culinary creations, ensuring that your recipes are successful and your caloric and nutritional intake is predictable. A scale is invaluable when preparing European recipes, where amounts are often listed by weight rather than by volume. If you suspect your scale is not giving you correct measurements, calibrate it.

Instructions

    • 1

      Set the scale to zero.

    • 2

Place a plastic container on the scale and set it to zero again.

    • 3

Fill a measuring cup with 1 cup of water.

    • 4

Pour the water into the plastic container on the scale. If the scale is reading correctly, it should read 8 ounces. If the scale is not reading correctly, adjust your future measurements by the amount the scale is off, or take the scale to a professional who can adjust it for you. If you have a digital scale, it is possible to correct the calibration yourself by consulting the scale’s manual.
