How to Fix a Torn Backpack

Backpacks are strong and durable but have to be packed properly to avoid damage such as rips and tears. Too much weight or an uneven distribution of weight can easily lead to a small tear or rip that, if not dealt with promptly, can easily lead to more-serious problems. Repairing a torn backpack is a more-economical solution than buying a new one.

Instructions

Diagnose the severity of the tear. Most tears in backpacks are L-shaped and follow the grain of the fabric. Tears tend to be along the seams of the backpack because of the stress and tension the backpack undergoes. Most tears can be temporarily mended with a strong adhesive tape. Another option is to carry a needle and thread in the backpack so that you can temporarily mend a tear or hole.

Cut a piece of patch slightly larger than the dimensions of the tear. Various patching materials are available including nylon patches and mending tape. Select a color that matches the backpack. The patch should be 1 inch wider and 1 inch longer than the tear. Place the tape over the tear with the adhesive side of the tape facing the fabric.

    • 3

Make an outline around the mending tape with a piece of chalk. Remove the mending tape and preheat the fabric with the iron. Place the patch back on the fabric within the chalked outline. Read the ironing directions on the packaging or container for the patch. Iron the patch to the backpack and allow the patch to cool down before moving the backpack.

Thread a needle with a strong nylon thread. Stitch around four edges of the the patch using a zigzag pattern. Stitching the patch to backpack provides extra strength and makes the repair more secure.
