How to Use a Runner & Overlay Tablecloth Together

A tablecloth overlay is a piece of decorative fabric that goes on top of a plain tablecloth. The overlay can be a sheer fabric so the tablecloth shows through, or it can have a print or pattern. A table runner is a thinner length of fabric that usually sits on top of a tablecloth, as well. You can use both an overlay and a table runner to make a bold statement with your kitchen linen. Use these on top of a floor-length tablecloth.

Instructions

    • 1

Adjust the tablecloth so it hangs down evenly on all sides of the table. When using an additional underlay, the tablecloth itself should reach the floor, or at least be longer than the overlay, so it is visible.

    • 2

Drape the overlay on top of the tablecloth. The overlay should hang down at least 6 inches on all sides. Adjust it so it is even on all sides of the table.

    • 3

Place the runner over the overlay so it runs across the middle of the length of the table. The runner should be 1/3 the width of the whole table and be a color or pattern that complements the overlay and the tablecloth.

    • 4

Adjust the runner so at least 6 inches hangs off either end of the table; it should be even with the overlay. Place your centerpiece on top of the runner.
