How to Child-Proof Accordion Closet Doors

Accordion closet doors, also known as bi-fold doors, can be dangerous for a small child. Small children can get their fingers caught in the front-facing hinge that opens toward you when the door is opened. You may also want to child-proof the doors just to keep your baby out of the closet. Child-proofing an accordion closet door involves installing a lock that makes the hinge immovable.

Instructions

    • 1

Close the accordion door all the way. If you have a long closet with more than one door, close them all.

    • 2

Push a plastic bi-fold door lock over the hinge of the first accordion door. Push a separate lock over the hinges of each door on the closet. When you push the lock into place, the handle should face outward toward you.

    • 3

Push a provided shim up into the lock, between the plastic piece and the door, if the lock is loose. If the lock fits snugly, do not install the shim.
