How to Fix a Leak in a Mattress

An air mattress cradles the sleeper on a bladder of air, providing a good night’s sleep for unexpected overnight guests. In order for the air mattress to do its job, though, it needs to be air tight. If your mattress has sprung a leak, first take steps to locate the leak then patch it immediately. Patch the air mattress, as soon as you notice a problem, as the leak will slowly widen over time.

Instructions

    • 1

Inflate the air mattress completely then plug it up.

    • 2

Locate the leak by wetting your bare arm with water and passing it close to the surface of the air mattress. The escaping air will blow onto your skin, allowing you to identify where the leak is.

    • 3

Circle the leak with a felt pen so you can locate it again.

    • 4

      Deflate the air mattress completely.

    • 5

Flatten the section of plastic where the leak is.

    • 6

Cut a patch from the fabric provided in an air mattress repair kit. The patch should cover the puncture entirely with an extended border of about 1/2-inch to 1 inch on all sides.

    • 7

Apply a layer of adhesive from the air mattress repair kit onto the leak.

    • 8

Lay the fabric patch over the leak and allow the adhesive to cure completely. The adhesive’s packaging will tell you how long to let it sit. Once the glue has cured, the air mattress is ready to use.
