How to Make a Globe Pillow

When you are teaching elementary-aged children about basic geography, you can make the lesson more interesting if you combine your lecture with a hands-on craft that is related to the topic. For example, when you are teaching kids about globes, show them how to construct a soft globe pillow they can use to better understand geography. You can make one using a few basic materials you can find at any craft supply store.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut out six oblong leaf shapes to each measure 12 inches long and 6 inches wide from canvas fabric.

    • 2

Arrange two of the leaf shapes side by side on a table with the wide center pieces touching.

    • 3

Pin along the touching edges using straight pins, then sew the pinned edges using an embroidery needle and embroidery floss. Remove the straight pins.

    • 4

Place one edge of a third leaf shape next to one edge of the sewn leaf form. Pin and sew the third leaf shape as before. Repeat this process to sew all six leaf shapes together.

    • 5

Wrap the two ends around so they touch, then pin and sew the edges together as before.

    • 6

Cut out two circles to each measure 4 inches in diameter from canvas fabric.

    • 7

Place and pin one of the circles onto one end of the sewn form using an embroidery needle and embroidery floss.

    • 8

Insert cotton batting into the sewn form through the open end until the ball is full and taut.

    • 9

Place and pin the remaining circle on the open end of the ball, then sew it in place using an embroidery needle and embroidery floss.

    • 10

Paint the entire ball using medium blue acrylic paint, then allow the paint to dry for 30 minutes.

    • 11

Paint the continents on the sewn globe pillow using green and brown acrylic paints. Allow the globe pillow to dry for another 30 minutes.
