Thinsulate Insulation Ratings

Thinsulate insulation is a synthetic material manufactured by 3M that provides warmth to things such as gloves, hats, boots, coats and even comforters. The insulation is measured in terms of grams. The more grams your Thinsulate product has, the warmer it should be. Temperature ranges are not supplied by 3M; rather, the grams are applied to several different conditions based on use.
  1. Thinsulate

    • Thinsulate is a cost-friendly alternative to down feather when trying to stay warm outside. The material is composed of thin microfiber woven together, trapping air molecules between the body and outside. The more air the material is capable of trapping, the warmer the piece of clothing will be. The company says the fibers are capable of trapping more air with less space because the fibers in Thinsulate are finer than other synthetic insulation materials.

    Grams

    • Thinsulate is measured in terms of grams. The heavier the gram weight, the warmer the clothing article will be. Thinsulate gram standards are different depending on the article of clothing. In general, Thinsulate sells products ranging from 100 grams to 1000 grams. The temperature ratings can range depending on the the clothing article, gram weight and how a person's metabolic makeup responds to the insulation.

    Ratings

    • For items such as hats and gloves, the Thinsulate weight is typically 100 to 200 grams. Thinsulation weights of 200 to 400 grams should be used in cold weather by people who are participating in a high level of activity, thus requiring less insulation. Examples include work boots, hiking boots and hunting boots. Very cold conditions will require at least 600 grams of Thinsulate. The 1000-gram boots are for extremely cold conditions in which people are performing minimal to light activity.

    Types Of Thinsulate

    • Thinsulate produces several different types of materials based on the Thinsulate technology. Aside from the original Thinsulate materials, the company produces insulation that provides antimicrobial odor protection and insulation that is manufactured from recycled materials. Thinsulate Flex is a stretchable material that provides the same warmth but is less likely to tear. Other Thinsualte products include flame-resistant materials, Thinsualte Supreme, and Thinsulate Ultra. Thinsulate Supreme material has a soft, silky feel, which makes it an ideal choice for coats. Thinsulate Ultra is a specially formulated product that is thinner and more lightweight than the original Thinsulate
