How to Cover Up the Smell of Smoke Indoors

If you or someone in your home smokes, you may be embarrassed to have nonsmoker guests visit. Chances are they will smell the smoke as soon as the door opens. Ideally, you should not smoke, or if there is a smoker in the house, you should not allow him to smoke in the home. To solve your immediate problem, though, temporarily mask or cover up the smell of smoke in your home. You can also do a few things to eliminate some of the odors.

Instructions

    • 1

Light scented candles or incense or spray a deodorizing or fragrant spray around the room. Simmering potpourri or cinnamon sticks on the stove also works well to cover smoke smells. You can also simmer apple cider vinegar. The smell of the apple cider vinegar helps mask the smell and it has the ability to absorb the smoke odors as well.

    • 2

Spray a fabric spray on the upholstered furniture. Use one that also eliminates odors, if desired.

    • 3

Bake cookies, a cake, bread, pumpkin pie or another dish that is known to fill the house with a pleasant aroma.

    • 4

Change your clothes that likely smell of smoke to a clean set straight out of the dryer.

    • 5

Sprinkle baking soda or a carpet deodorizer on your carpets and 20 minutes later, vacuum them.

    • 6

Wipe down the walls with a damp, soapy rag. This helps eliminate some of the smells that adhere to the walls. Clean the other surfaces in your home as well, if possible.

    • 7

Wash the towels and throw rugs from your bathroom. Remove any books or magazines that likely smell like smoke.

    • 8

Run a HEPA filter, which helps eliminate some of the smoke odors. You can also open your windows and run exhaust fans to get some of the smoke smell out.

    • 9

Don’t go overboard and have too many competing odors -- they may not smell pleasant together -- or have too strong of a fragrance, which can also be bothersome.
