How to Make a Wall Collage With a Clear Coating

A wall collage allows you to add a personal touch to a room using images that entertain you or invoke positive feelings. Wall collages may be affixed directly to the wall or they may be mounted on a poster board. Both methods allow you to create a complex piece of art that will enhance your living space. Create your own wall collage out of photo printouts, magazine images, sheet music or any other paper image you love.

Instructions

  1. Wallpaper Paste

    • 1

Cut out all the paper images you want to use using a pair of scissors. If you are using a large sheet of newspaper as the backing for your wall collage, you will need many small images or several larger images.

    • 2

Glue these images to a large sheet of newspaper. If they are irregular in shape, overlap them, and if they have straight edges, butt them up next to each other. The less white spaces you have, the better the collage will look.

    • 3

Apply a thin coat of decoupage medium to seal the images in using a paintbrush. This clear coat allows the pictures to look their best by adding a shine to the surface while simultaneously protecting the images.

    • 4

Allow the decoupage medium to dry thoroughly. The amount of time varies from medium to medium, so check the packaging for more precise details.

    • 5

Apply a strippable wallpaper paste to the back of the newspaper using a paintbrush.

    • 6

Mount the collage by laying it against the wall, pressing it flat with your fingers.

    Poster Board

    • 7

Cut out all the images you wish to place on your wall collage using a pair of scissors.

    • 8

Paste these images to a piece of poster board using glue. Use a paintbrush to apply the paste for an even texture. Cluster the images closely together so that none of the poster board shows through.

    • 9

Apply a thin coat of decoupage medium to seal the images in using a paintbrush.

    • 10

Allow the decoupage medium to dry thoroughly.

    • 11

Trim away the edges of the poster board when you have all the images on it that you want, leaving only the pictures visible.

    • 12

Press the side of the poster board bearing the adhesive putty to the wall where you want the wall collage to hang. Press it against the wall firmly for several seconds, which activates the putty.
