How to Cover Metal Basement Poles

Even though they serve an important purpose, metal basement poles will stick out like a sore thumb in a remodeled basement. No matter how well you decorate the basement, those metal poles will draw your guest’s eyes right to them. Unfortunately, many of the poles are load-bearing and removing them will be detrimental to the structure of your home. However, you can cover the metal basement poles with a variety of options.

      Apply an oil-based metal primer over the clean metal poles and let dry. Paint over the primer with an oil-based paint and let dry. This is typically the easiest and cheapest option for covering the basement poles.

      Construct a wooden box using 2 x 4s around the metal poles. Place the same molding used in the basement around the top and bottom of the wooden box. This will help tie the look of the boxed poles together with the surrounding area. If the basement is not refinished, use any type of molding or forgo adding the trim.

      Cover the metal pole in fabric that complements the basement. If you decorated your basement with warm tones, use a fabric that features warm colors.
