How to Upholster a Seat Bun

Thanks to the seat bun in your vehicle, you feel more comfortable while driving. Made from a foam material, the piece acts as a cushion for your seat. Over time, you might notice that the foam molds to your body's shape. Damage to the cushion, including cigarette burns, fraying, and general wear and tear leaves the foam exposed. Upholster the seat bun to cover any damage and make the seat look brand new.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the seats in your car by following the guidelines in your vehicle's manual. The seat bun typically attaches to the car seat with screws underneath. Remove the screws, and pop the seat bun loose. Set the fabric-covered foam on a flat surface.

    • 2

Locate the hog rings on the upholstery, which look like rounded staples. Unhook the hog rings with a pair of pliers. Slide the edge of the screwdriver under the seams on the seat until you loosen the glue. Peel away the seams and set in a safe location. Rip off the old fabric and discard.

    • 3

Cover the seat bun with new upholstery fabric with the patterned side facing the seat. Insert sewing pins that mark how the fabric covers the foam. Use a second piece of fabric on the bottom of the seat bun, where you sit.

    • 4

Stitch the upholstery fabric following the line of your pins. Remove the pins and trim away any excess fabric. Shake the spray adhesive gently and coat the seat bun. Turn the fabric inside out, so that the patterned side faces out. Slide the cover onto the seat bun, and run your hands over the fabric, pressing it against the adhesive.

Tear off the fabric from your original seams. The seams sit along the grooves of the seat bun. Spray each seam with the spray adhesive and wrap new fabric around each one. Cut off the excess fabric, and spray the grooves of the bun with more adhesive. Gently press the seams into the grooves until the adhesive sets.
