How to Build Roof Rakes

Weight from snow, ice, other precipitation and debris can cause undue stress on your roof that can eventually cause leaks as well as caving. Roofs should be sloped so that the debris will slide off, but in some cases, cold temperatures will cause it to stick to the roof. Push the debris off with a roof rake, which you can purchase from a hardware or home improvement store. If one isn’t available, make it yourself at home.

Instructions

    • 1

Unscrew the bolts off the snow shovel to completely detach the shovel. If the bolts are hard to screw off, cut off the snow shovel handle with a hack saw.

    • 2

Position the shovel horizontally in front of you so the bottom of the shovel is closest to you. Measure and mark the middle of the shovel. Measure and mark a spot that is 2 inches from the top of the shovel. This is the offset middle of the shovel and will serve as a guide for where you’ll attach the aluminum handle.

    • 3

Position the flange above the mark and secure it in place by drilling screws through the holes in the flange and into the shovel. Secure the screws with nuts tightened on the back of the wood with a wrench. Saw the end of the screws off with a hack saw.

    • 4

Spread a thin layer of epoxy on the end of an aluminum pole. The pole should be long enough for you to be able to scrape the snow off your roof without needing to stand on a ladder. The aluminum pole should be wide enough to fit snugly in the flange.

    • 5

Slide the epoxy-covered end of the pole into the flange and press it tight for five minutes until the epoxy cures. Let it sit for 48 hours to give the epoxy time to completely harden. Don’t use the roof rake within this time period, as you can damage the tool.
