DIY Project to Cover Ceilings

Ceilings are often overlooked by homeowners, but they affect the room’s entire appearance. An old, stained and ugly ceiling will create the illusion of a dingy location. Replacing a ceiling is a time-consuming and expensive option, and many homeowners do not have the time or extra money to go that route. Instead, choose a do-it-yourself project to cover the ceiling and improve the look of the room. Before you begin the project, wipe the ceiling clean with a dust mop to remove debris such as cobwebs.

Instructions

    • 1

Apply a stain-blocking primer, let it dry, then paint the ceiling with a desired color. The primer helps prevent stains from bleeding through the paint. Use painter's tape around the trim to keep the ceiling paint from coming in contact with the molding. Attach a paint roller to the end of an extension handle, and roll the paint on the ceiling.

Cover the ceiling with fabric. Fabric is available in a wide array of designs and colors, the options you choose is virtually endless, and it's a quick way to cover an old or stained ceiling. Use spray fabric glue to attach the fabric to the ceiling, and stretch the fabric tight across the ceiling. Alternatively, drape the fabric by attaching only the middle and ends of it to the ceiling.

Glue coordinating sheets of scrapbook paper to the ceiling to create a patchwork quilt-like look. Choose a few different designs of scrapbook paper that feature colors that complement each other. Spray craft adhesive to the back of the paper, and carefully place it directly in the middle of the ceiling. Continue gluing the paper to the ceiling, working outward from the middle.

Cover the ceiling with faux tin ceiling tiles. Add contact cement to the back of the tiles, and gently press them to the ceiling. Faux tin ceiling tiles are available at home improvement centers.
