How to Kill Termites With a Biodegradable Pesticide

Considered one of the most damaging pests for homeowners, termites are typically treated with pesticides. Many pesticides contain harsh chemicals that stay in the environment for an extended period of time, polluting the environment long after their initial use. Instead, use borax -- also known as boric acid or sodium borate -- as a natural and inexpensive biodegradable pesticide to kill and control damaging termites.

Instructions

    • 1

Sprinkle the borax powder behind furniture and appliances where termites are present. Remove the borax once a week with your vacuum cleaner and sprinkle fresh borax in its place.

    • 2

Pour 1 gallon of hot water in a clean, 5-gallon bucket. Add 1 1/2 cups of borax to the water and stir with a long-handled spoon until the borax dissolves.

    • 3

Pour the biodegradable pesticide into a clean garden sprayer. Spray the infested wood with the mixture until lightly saturated. Let the wood dry for several hours. Keep pets and children away from the area while the wood is wet.

    • 4

Repeat Step 3 two more times -- for a total of three treatments -- that same day. Make sure to let the wood dry completely between treatments.

    • 5

Reapply the homemade pest control whenever needed.
